Jos Vranken leaves as CEO NBTC

As of October 1, Jos Vranken is stepping down from the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions after an impressive 17 years as its managing director.

After taking over as managing director at the end of 2007, Vranken carried out a large-scale reorganization as a result of the financial crisis and subsequent cutbacks. The crisis was followed by a period in which the emphasis was on optimizing the economic impact of leisure and business visits, among others through theme years and thematic collaborations for the purpose of regional visitor distribution. Rapid growth then led to a new era for destination Netherlands. Social awareness of tourism changed; among residents, visitors, businesses and administrators. Under his leadership, NBTC therefore introduced the national tourism vision 'Perspective 2030' in 2018, which marked the start of the transition from destination promotion to destination management. This also formed the basis for sustainable recovery after the corona pandemic. Since then, the stakes have shifted from merely attracting more visitors to focusing on the contribution visitors can make to societal challenges. This new approach and principles are not only widely embraced in the Netherlands, but are also receiving a great deal of recognition internationally.

Jos Vranken: "A new phase has begun in recent years, in which we as an organization have been making the transition towards a national destination management organization. The basis for this is solid, with a clear ambition and strategy and a highly professional, motivated and healthy organization. Early this year the agreements with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate were also confirmed again for the next four years in a new subsidy grant. A good time for me to pass on the baton now. I will still be fully involved with NBTC until October 1; I want to use some time after that to first take some distance so that I can orient myself on my next step with a fresh perspective."

Han Polman, Supervisory Board Chairman NBTC: "The Supervisory Board of NBTC thanks Jos Vranken for his great contribution in recent years to the developments within the visitor economy and hospitality domain in our country. As managing director at NBTC, Jos has had a decisive influence on the further development of the sector and the interaction with governments. We are very grateful to Jos for the wonderful cooperation!"

No successor is yet known. The NBTC Supervisory Board, with the help of an external agency, will start the recruitment and selection process for a new managing director this month. Further information will follow soon, including via the website of NBTC.
